On Being – Seth Godin “The Art of Noticing and Then Creating”

Wow. I’ve always been a fan of Seth, but this was next level genius. I wrote down so many notes while I was listening (stop and start, I didn’t want to miss a thing), I practically wrote down the transcript. He spoke to Krista Tippett about the new ‘post industrial connection economy’, that we now have the opportunity to be part of change, and we should use this momentum to be artists in everything we do, creating things that matter to others. Marketing included!

“Marketing isn’t advertising. Marketing is the product we make, the service we offer, the life we live. And so the question as you go forward is – do you choose ethical marketing that doesn’t include yelling at people, networking your way to the top, spamming people and lying. But instead involves weaving a story, weaving a tribe, weaving a network that means something.”

My top takeaway from this – He talks about the old theory of ‘big business’ is dead. It’s not about being number one, the best seller, having the most followers. What you should be asking yourself is “how few people can I influence, and still do this tomorrow”?

Being Boss

These chicks are the bomb. Anything and everything about running your own business – particularly women in business, with really in-depth interviews and conversations about the nitty gritty things that matter.

I’ve written their motto ‘do the work’ is on post-it’s all over the place, and when I’m struggling a little for motivation, I pop one of these on and it puts a rocket up my butt!

A couple of gem episodes:

#57 I will teach you to be rich with Ramit Sethi
“Money is part of a rich life, but it’s a small part of a rich life.”

#17 How to sell your creative work with sales coach Kendrick Shope
“If you can improve someone’s life (with your product) and you don’t share it? Shame on you.”

#2 What to do when you’re freaking out about money
“Money is energy. It’s not good or bad. It’s neutral – like electricity.”

The Slow Home Podcast

Over the last 12 months or so, I’ve been learning a lot and slowly shifting my lifestyle choices to become more aware, sustainable and intentional about what how I want to live my life. I stumbled upon this podcast recently and found it so inspiring – normal people talking about all these new ideas I was just coming across in an open and achievable way.

A couple to get you started:

#25 Sam Lustgarden on living a frugal life
“The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.”

#34 Small changes and green smoothies with Jen Hansard
I love simplegreensmoothies.com – they are responsible for my husband and I getting on the green smoothie train, and their story is pretty awesome too.

#38 Zero waste living with Bea Johnson
“You don’t have to make everything from scratch to live without creating waste.”

Magic Lessons – “Sexy, Dirty, Nasty, Wicked”

Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat Pray Love, and most recently Big Magic, created a podcast to chat to real creative women needing an extra helping hand when it comes to finding inspiration and motivation towards their work.

This episode in particular struck a chord with me – Elizabeth spoke to a woman who was struggling with creating passion for her side art projects because she already felt spent from her day job working in the creative space. Her advice of thinking of your side project as an dirty sexy affair that you’re having on your day job was inspired to say the least!
